Essential Football Betting Terms for Every Bettor

Money Line

Money line betting is one of the most essential football betting terms for every bettor. This type of betting works by speculating on the outcome of an NFL game. On the money line, bettors are given a positive or negative number. The number denotes the amount of money one must wager to win $100 (or whatever the set amount may be). For instance, with a money line bet of +180, a bettor would need to risk $100 to win 180. The negative number, on the other hand, denotes how much must be wagered for a $100 payout. So, for a -200 money line bet, a bettor would need to wager $200 to win $100. Money line bets are rather simple and straightforward, and can be a great option for bettors who are new to football betting.

Spread Betting

Spread betting is another must-know football betting term for everyone involved in the sport. This type of wagering is based on the outcome of a game being decided by a point difference. When making a spread bet, the goal is to wager on whether or not the favorite will win by a certain amount of points. While the favorite will typically be assigned a negative point amount (e.g. -6.5), the underdog will be assigned the opposite (e.g. +6.5). If a bettor places a wager on the favorite and the final score shows that the favorite wins by at least 7 points, they will be successful. Conversely, if the bettor places a wager on the underdog and the final score shows that the underdog losses by no more than 6 points, they will be successful.

Over/Under

What is probably the most popular type of football wagering is also one of the most essential football betting terms for every bettor. Over/under bets require the bettor to correctly predict the combined scoring total of both teams in a given game. This is otherwise known as the total. Depending on the bookmaker, the total line may vary from game to game. At the beginning of a game, the total line will be set at a number. A bettor’s job is to decide whether the total combined score of both teams will be over or under the set line. So, if a total line is set at 45 and above, the bettor’s job is to decide if the combined score of both teams will exceed 45 points or not.

Parlay

Parlay betting is one of the more advanced football betting terms for every bettor. With parlay betting, bettors are provided the opportunity to combine two or more wagers into one. For instance, a bettor may combine a money line and a point spread bet on the same game. The goal with parlays is to successfully predict the outcomes of all the wagers within the same wager. It’s important to keep in mind that all the wagers within the same parlay must be successful in order for the bettor to win. If anyone of them fails, the bettor will lose their wager.

Prop Bets

Proposition bets, or prop bets, are a bit more complex compared to other football betting terms. This type of football wagering is based on the performance of a single player in a single game. Prop bets can range from predicting if a certain player will score a touchdown or a certain team will win by a certain amount of points. Prop betting can be a great way to increase the excitement of a game. It’s important to note, however, that prop bets can be difficult to predict and may require an in-depth knowledge of the players and teams involved.
